In the latest version of WordPress, you will see new look of media uploader when upload any media type to your WordPress blog. In addition, WordPress has also decided to disappear the change of the directory path option from the setting panel. The action may be taken by the WordPress team due to it is not as commonly used as other option. However, you may still organize your uploads into month and year based folders by WordPress setting panel (Settings » Media). The default media upload directory is “wp-content/uploads“. There are few peoples to use the option for changing the media directory path.

In latest version of WordPress, if you want to change the upload directory path you need to edit the wpconfig.php file from your root directory of your WordPress installation. Follow the guidelines to change the media upload directory path with your own choice path.

Make these changes carefully as you are going to change in the main WordPress installation files. For safety, make a backup file to your hard drive.

  • Firstly, you have to access the wpconfig.php file of your WordPress installation. You may choose log into cpanel of your hosting provider account » file manager » WordPress root directory » wpconfig.php. OR reach to the wpconfig.php file via FTP method.
  • If you want to upload media directory under wp-content/files, paste the following code in your wp-config.php file.
    define( 'UPLOADS', 'wp-content/'.'files' );
  • If you want upload media directory to be in the root directory as “http://www.domain.com/files”, paste the following code in your wp-config.php file.
    define( 'UPLOADS', ''.'files' );
  • You may also organize the upload directory into month and year based folders by going to WordPress Dashboard » Settings » Media.organize media uplaod in month and year based folders.
